Everybody Wins!

Everybody Wins! is a lunchtime literacy mentoring program that strives to build literacy skills and a love of reading in elementary school students. This program pairs second and third grade students with volunteers from local companies and organizations to share lunch, conversation, and good books. These consistent, one-on-one experiences increase a child’s opportunity for success, both academically and in life.

Throughout the year, the students look forward to spending time with their Reading Buddies and benefit from the encouragement of a caring adult and opportunity to read stories together, while mentors enjoy sharing their love of books with their student. Formal evaluations have demonstrated that Everybody Wins! is one of the very few programs to effectively impact low-income students in reading comprehension, motivation, and achievement, as well as overall academic performance, classroom behavior, self-confidence, and social skills.

This year, we have matched nearly 200 students at Pittsburgh Faison in Homewood, Pittsburgh King and Pittsburgh Allegheny in the North Side, Pittsburgh Arlington in the South Side, and Pittsburgh Weil in the Hill District with volunteer reading mentors!

An exciting addition to our literacy and mentoring lineup is RIF Readers, a pilot project that debuted in October! Every week, Eckert Seamans’ Downtown law offices reverberate with the excitement of Manchester Academic Charter School second-graders sharing books and discussion with their corporate reading buddies. Mentors appreciate the convenience of the new model, which brings the students to them and reduces the time they need to set aside on busy work days. Children benefit as well from the corporate setting, which fosters a powerful sense of ownership and belonging, opening the door to options and opportunities they otherwise might not have imagined – coupled with the already substantial academic benefits that literacy mentoring offers.
