Storymobiles are libraries-on-wheels; taking stories, activities, books, and literacy resources to early childcare centers, PreK and kindergarten classrooms, afterschool programs, public housing communities, and community events across our city. In bi-weekly visits, our Storymobile team leads innovative programming designed to build literacy skills, expand content knowledge, and get children excited about reading and learning.

Our programming focuses on kindergarten readiness and is designed to introduce students to the joy of reading; expose them to challenging subject matter, including math and science themes, in a way that they embrace and enjoy; and reinforce the skills recommended by state and federal curricula. We also work to engage parents, grandparents, caregivers, and other family members with events and activities designed to engage the entire community.

All of our Storymobile children participate in our Books for Keeps program, enabling them to select a book to take home and keep four times throughout the year. In our afterschool programs, children get to select take-home books at each and every visit.

Our Book Babies initiative encourages new parents to Read, Talk, Sing, Play, EVERYDAY! with their little ones. Book Babies welcomes young families aboard the Storymobile for dedicated storytimes, where staff members model reading, playing, craft-making and nurturing in a safe, supportive environment. Caregivers share tips and resources along with companionship. These neighborhood play groups foster friendships that deepen and grow with the little ones. At each visit, families pick up a bag of books, toys and personal care items to help give tots a happy, healthy start!

Last year, we served nearly 5,100 children and families. We loaned nearly 15,500 books and gave away more than 14,300 additional books to keep to the kids at our sites!
