Our Books for Keeps Program provides free books and motivational reading activities to more than 20,000 of Pittsburgh’s most economically disadvantaged children each year. Throughout the school year and summer, each of our sites (schools, preschools, community centers, afterschool programs, etc.) invites their children to participate in Reading Celebrations designed to get kids excited about reading! During each Reading Celebration, the RIF Pittsburgh Site Coordinator, a teacher or staff member, or a trained RIF Pittsburgh Outreach Member engages the children in fun and interactivity activities that show how much fun reading can be. After the activity, every child chooses a brand-new book to keep.
This program is possible because of the commitment of our Site Coordinators – teachers, principals, preschool directors, librarians, or any childcare or educational professional who wants to help children build home libraries and discover the joy of reading. As a committed volunteer of RIF Pittsburgh, Site Coordinators are responsible for receiving RIF books, sorting books according to grade level, collecting and reporting data to RIF Pittsburgh, and organizing and conducting fun, motivational Reading Celebrations.
