What Do You See?

Age Frame: PreK – Grade 2

Time Frame: 25 minutes

Overview: This activity gives children the opportunity to exercise their imaginations by transforming a shape into a recognizable image.  The book Duck! Rabbit by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld is a witty book about how the same shape can be viewed in two different ways.  Read it before doing the activity below, and then make a shape of your own!


  • Newspaper
  • Washable paint
  • White paper
  • Markers or crayons


  1. Lay the newspaper on a flat surface.
  2. Fold the white paper in half, and unfold it.  Place it on top of the newspaper.
  3. Dab a small amount of paint into the center of the white paper, along the fold.
  4. Fold the white paper in half again and press your fingers over the part that is covering the paint.  Try to spread out the paint by rubbing your fingers over the white paper.
  5. Unfold the paper and leave it on the newspaper.  Let the paint dry for 10-15 minutes.  While it is drying, think about what your shape looks like.  Just like in the book Duck! Rabbit!, you can make the shape into whatever you see in your imagination.
  6. Once it is dry, use your markers/crayons to make the shape into whatever you have imagined.  You can add a background too!




Duck! Rabbit!

This book is a clever take on the optical illusion of “is it a duck or a rabbit?”  Two voices banter back and forth about how the cloud is in the shape of a duck versus a rabbit.  Allow children to voice their opinions about the shape.  A fun and witty read for children between preK and grade 2.
