Book Babies

Book Babies supports young parents, caregivers and their tots, ages 0-3, by providing resources, weekly storytimes and motivational tips to nurture early, at-home literacy development. The program is an acknowledgement that parents and caregivers are their children’s first teachers, critical to developing literacy and school-readiness.

During storytime sessions, we encourage caregivers to read, talk, sing and play with their little ones – every day! Parents and tots can spend quality time bonding with each other and others in their community as they learn fun new songs like “Way Up High in the Apple Tree” or “One Bright Scarf”; listen to interactive read-alouds; and play with bubbles, egg shakers, scarves, animal puppets and more!

We specifically focus on developing crucial pre-reading skills – including phonological, print and rhyme awareness, letter recognition, visual literacy and narrative skills – that will set them up to become strong readers in the future.

For parents and caregivers, these sessions provide a much-needed forum to connect with each other over shared experiences and similar struggles, cultivating supportive friendships that deepen and grow with their little ones.

At the end of every visit, each family member is also welcome to pick a new book to keep—helping families to build their home libraries! In addition, enrolled families receive a bag full of eight new, engaging, and culturally relevant books, delivered right to their doors each month!

In Book Babies, as across our programming, we are highlighting books by Black and multicultural writers and illustrators, to ensure that even our tiniest learners can start to develop positive racial identities through reading. Examples include My Heart Beats by Rina Singh, which ties in different languages from all over the world; These Hands by Hope Lynne Price and award-winning illustrator Bryan Collier; and Me and the Family Tree: Celebrate Family Love and Connection! by Carole Boston Weatherford.
